In normally temperate Yunnan province the lack of significant rainfall since last September has turned vast areas into a parched environmental disaster zone of dwindling reservoirs and weakened rivers. Vast areas of terraced fields that should be lush with the vital winter crop of corn, sugar, onions and other produce looking instead like stair-step deserts, their normally rich soil as hard as rocks.
