The number of daily coronavirus infections in the United States has surged above 55,000, more than double the caseload two weeks ago as the deadly pandemic accelerated across the Americas, but a slowdown in Europe led Britain to announce July 3 the first exemptions to its quarantine rules. America’s spiraling coronavirus cases comes as the country prepares for a long Fourth of July holiday weekend traditionally marked by travel, gatherings, and parties -- a combination that could further fuel the pandemic. In an alarming trend, the infection curve is rising in 40 of 50 U.S. states. Four states -- Arizona, California, Florida, and Texas -- reported a combined 25,000 new confirmed coronavirus cases on July 2.
