French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May have thanked veterans and those who died during the landing of Allied forces in northern France on June 6, 1944. Macron, May and U.S. President Donald Trump -- the current leaders of the main Western Allied nations during World War II -- gathered in Normandy to mark the 75th anniversary of the landing known as the D-Day -- the opening phase of Operation Overlord -- the Allied campaign that contributed decisively to Nazi Germany's final defeat the following year. Macron and May spoke at a ceremony at Ver-Sur-Mer laying the cornerstone of a new memorial that will record the names of thousands of troops under British command who died on D-Day. Uniformed veterans in their 90s were present at the ceremony.
