Officers early on November 18 used tear gas, rubber bullets, and batons to force back dozens of protesters who tried to escape the Polytechnic University campus, which has been occupied for several days.
A number of people were detained.
Police had said protesters could leave the campus, but urged them to drop their weapons and remove their gas masks.
When police tried to enter the campus overnight on November 17, protesters threw petrol bombs and bricks at officers.
